There is a lot of talk about how people care about mental health (and those with disabilities, etc), but the way that we respond to these events shows that as a country (who we blame, what we clutch to our chests, etc), it shows that we really don't care.

Im not sure what to do. My brother had Downs which put me on a path where Ive volunteered for groups that worked with mentally and physically disabled for as long as I can remember. My 4 year old is active in our groups where we help mentally and physically disabled people. Were active in that community and I love working with them. I know many foster homes for the disabled (both kids and adults). What does that work really do though...? Its not like it has stopped any of the plethora of mass shootings, has it stopped any? I don't know.

Ive known people all over the spectrum, have contacts with professionals in the area for psychiatric needs. Every time I hear the line of oh people don't care, I guess it bothers me because I know many people who do care.

Mental Health issues are really hard to diagnose, hard to recognize who is a danger to others, who is a danger to themselves. What do you propose we do to fix it? Is it technology? Is it just throw money at programs and hope we catch more people who have issues?

I guess my first thought is we need to take semi and automatic weapons from people, citizens have no need for them. We need to make obtaining weapons hard. Obtaining a Gun of any kind should trigger mental health screenings.

The answer for mental health though, I dont really know what to do about that...

I don't know (it hits home for me too). I think if we can quit labeling people as "the other" might help. Fear of the other is a bad thing to begin with, but when you purposely say things to instigate people (to vote for you, cheer for you, etc), you are culpable imho.

And by the way, it's not an Assault Rifle; it doesn't have full-auto or select-fire function. I've fired an ACTUAL Assault Rifle (a police-issued rifle with an M16 lower), and this is nothing like it. It is a semi-automatic rifle no different than a Ruger 10/22.

He came from conditions that were beyond awful. His mother was a drug addict, and two of her boyfriends sexually and physically abused him.

I don't know whether or not he's going to be locked up for certain. Last I spoke to his grandfather last week, it seems medication is helping calm the boy down from his violent rages.

But EVERYONE on that forum agrees.....he should be locked up for good. He belongs in a psych ward where he can be helped on a permanent basis.

Black market is actually ok. Loners without social skills will not be adept at buying weapons off the street. When they try to buy them, it gives authorities a chance to catch them before they start using the weapon instead of after. In any case it just makes it harder to get a weapon, which may prevent a few cases.

I'm just telling you what I've been told. I've never personally met the man, or this child.

And medications have helped people tremendously. They helped me when I was a kid, and they help my father cope with his Bipolar disorder.

Obviously, they can't help everyone. But if they DO help someone, then they should be made available indeed.
