It was well before draft night that it was reported, and it was by Eric. The guy on Twitter could be repeating that reporting. As far as Eric, he legitimately heard that. I know people will pretend like they know exactly who Eric does and doesn't talk to, but he vets stuff, Dame and Jerami are close with JB (all three of them played on that Olympic team), Boston might've preferred Scoot+Simons over paying Brown a supermax, and Brown was rumored to be unhappy in Boston and could've leveraged the final year of his contract. I fully believe that was an option that Portland didn't explore because they wanted to go the young (and cheap) route and move on from Dame, and that explains Dame's recent comments about not wanting the same thing.
Eric's information is actually tied to the front office. Dame's camp has confirmed a lot of it. That's why I'm confident in the intel. That was Hoopsjock not Bones. He's been very on point with his other reporting (broke the Grant trade news months early). I believe he has some real insight; although its more of a one sided story he's getting from Dame's camp.
If he wasn't willing to kick the tires on Jaylen Brown, then all his statements about being willing to be aggressive in building around Dame and being willing to overpay are a lie to me. He made sure to kick the tires on the obviously untouchable Bam Adebayo though.I think theres a way for nearly all of these things to be true; but it doesn't mean Cronin was a liar or did anything wrong either. Situations can change, and parties can have incorrect assumptions of others, as well as incorrect assumption of informal agreements.
Scoot, Sharpe, Ant, etc for Brown is a bit more than “kicking tires”If he wasn't willing to kick the tires on Jaylen Brown, then all his statements about being willing to be aggressive in building around Dame and being willing to overpay are a lie to me. It makes sense that Riley would hold a few things back and see what happens up until training camp (which I think is October 3rd).Why are you convinced of this?
There’s aggressive and then there’s being stupid, Joe wasn’t going to be stupid. If he wasn't willing to kick the tires on Jaylen Brown, then all his statements about being willing to be aggressive in building around Dame and being willing to overpay are a lie to me. Will Pat Riley shift gears?
Correct.Scoot, Sharpe, Ant, etc for Brown is a bit more than “kicking tires”
Of course he's not going to try and be "stupid", but there's doing your due diligence and I think it's clear that Dame feels like Cronin didn't want to be aggressive. There’s aggressive and then there’s being stupid, Joe wasn’t going to be stupid.

I wouldn't do Sharpe too. As far as Cronin, he said that he thought they could win free agent battles but he didn't have enough confidence to bring on a guy in the final year of his deal who wanted to play with Dame and Jerami? So he was confident in winning free agents but not the one that actually wanted to be here? So while making all his statements about being aggressive and willing to overpay and being obligated to make a move for Dame, what was he hoping for then? A GM can always talk himself out of any aggressive move because there's always some risk involved and getting All-NBA caliber players usually involves an element of risk which is why they're available in the first place. There was never going to be a perfect move. Not sure I believe he never took the call. But I could see why he would be reluctant to trade Ant and Scoot for an upcoming FA.
I thought it was worth the risk for Simons and Miller though.
Edit: what they wanted Sharpe too? No fucking way would I do that
In the murky corridors of the Portland Trail Blazers' front office, there dwelled a disgruntled executive known as "Frank the Frustrated." Frank had a bone to pick with his boss, Joe Cronin.
..
This is all why it's understandable that Dame has gone scorched earth. That being said, I don't think the way Dame and Goodwin have handled this has had the desired outcome but there's still two weeks.I wouldn't do Sharpe too. From what I can tell, they didn't even try, because they wanted to go young instead. Which also explains why they didn't sign a single guy at the start of free agency, or trade 23, or open up future 1sts.
Yeah, there seems to be some spite from both parties that has made this situation uglier than it needed to be.This is all why it's understandable that Dame has gone scorched earth. Agreed and I'm sure Joe's "aw shucks" routine infuriates Dame every time he sees it. "We did everything we could, we wanted to do it for Dame but just couldn't..." blah blah balh. Joe took the least risk averse path, he's still doing that, that's all the guy has done. I hope it ends up with us having an exciting young team that in a few years another GM can fine tune into a champion under new ownership.Yeah, there seems to be some spite from both parties that has made this situation uglier than it needed to be.
We've needed a GM who can make things happen for years. Lack of execution can always be excused one way or another. Hopefully next time is different.Agreed and I'm sure Joe's "aw shucks" routine infuriates Dame every time he sees it. It’s not that good. If I were to guess

It appears you don't know the definition of "lie"If he wasn't willing to kick the tires on Jaylen Brown, then all his statements about being willing to be aggressive in building around Dame and being willing to overpay are a lie to me. He stated he was willing and obligated to be aggressive in building around Dame. If he then wasn't aggressive in building around Dame and chose to a completely different direction, how is that not a lie?It appears you don't know the definition of "lie"
That's your opinion. He stated he was willing and obligated to be aggressive in building around Dame. If he then wasn't aggressive in building around Dame and chose to a completely different direction, how is that not a lie?
There's a difference between a "lie" and an attempted failure. You have just drawn that line in the sand throughout this whole ordeal Torey. I've never bought into that narrative that Joe forced Dame out at all. Quite the opposite. I think something nobody talks about is more than likely to have led to Dame's request and it's less roster oriented and more coaching oriented...last two years we gave Dame a rookie coach and Spoelstra in my view is the best coach in the league. Dame is not dumb and I'm sure Jimmy and Bam have driven that point home. If you want a chip soon it's not a stretch to go with the guy who consistently gets to the dance. Listening to Dame's new music there's a lot about money and paying millions in taxes...I'm pretty sure that's another thing that affects Dame's decision making. They don't call him DOLLA for nothingHe stated he was willing and obligated to be aggressive in building around Dame. If he then wasn't aggressive in building around Dame and chose to a completely different direction, how is that not a lie?
