I already explained some of the pitfalls. You took the lowest possible cost. Not realistic. I took the mean and split the lowest possible and the highest possible and did the math. It could cost more than i stated as easily as it could cost less.
Power lines don't typically go in roads….that is the least cost effective way. This is largely why easements were developed. If power is run in the roads, every building needs a line, so now you have a mainline in the road and then a line at a 90 degree to ever building on both sides of the streets. Run the mainline on the side of the road and then you only need a line to each building on the other side of the street.
Putting power in the road would not work in many areas. Sewer and gas are already there. There are easement spacing requirements and depth requirements.
When roads are repaired, they tear up the top layer of asphalt and leave the others. Even if they went down to dirt to repair, it is still not digging into the ground in 95% of road repair cases.
I do not believe what you are suggesting is accurate at all.
Of course it isn't accurate. It's all an estimate. Your numbers are almost certainly not accurate either.

There are already easements in the road. So they aren't a problem. And this is a government project which can eliminate easements via eminent domain.

Yes sewer and gas are already underground, but they are hard to access for repairs. I'm suggesting updating that.

Over 9 million homes have lead pipes that need to be replaced. Mostly in low income areas. This would address that problem as well. And replacing the lead pipes NEEDS to be done. It is immoral to continue allowing homes to be serviced by lead pipes. It is harming those communities.

While you're at it, future proof the services...

A lot of these costs would be shared. A not insignificant amount of it is already going to be spent anyway. How much would depend on the district and the specific situation. But if we had a trillion dollar fund available that local communities could tap into you can bet they'd be doing everything possible to take advantage of it.

You'd just have to make sure certain criteria was met before releasing the funds.

How are we not sending everything in to stop these fires? I know lot of help has come. But, we got to get these fires out.

I don't know whether these fires were set intentionally (it appears at least one may have been) or that they are true wild fires. But, the mismanagement issues here are insane if true. No water in the reservoir, all the extreme cuts to the fire department, etc etc.

The losses could be over a billion. Not sure how the insurance companies are going to be able to pay out for all of this. It might bankrupt them.

Governor Newsom invited Trump to view fire damage. He has not replied. Better to just call names while President Musk blames fires on LA having female fire chief (she has 22 years experience and worked her way up the ranks).

Good. Pay out for everyone, fuck the insurance companies i hope all of the companies get fucked and we can put in regulations so they can't fuck us over like it's a business model... oh wait, that's because that IS their business model.

Pay every cent people deserve, then fuck the companies for the rest of eternity. I hope they all go bankrupt after they pay out, it's what they deserve.

What additional steps do you propose? It's not clear that there's more that can be done.
Maybe if we lashed Trump to the tower on Mt. Wilson, he could blow hot air eastward and counteract the Santa Ana.

I don't know whether these fires were set intentionally (it appears at least one may have been) or that they are true wild fires.

Very likely a combination of various sources - firebugs, power lines, people trying to bbq in a windstorm, smokers, etc.

But, the mismanagement issues here are insane if true.

If true. Unlikely to be true in any meaningful sense.

Yeah, it's too bad one reservoir was off-line. Not sure there actually were extreme cuts to the fire department.

People want to find a scapegoat, but there are literally billions of people to blame.

I used to live in a garage apartment 4 houses from the Eaton fire perimeter, and I only escaped the fire by leaving town a mere 30 years or so ago. Close call!

Cats don't play with matches. They are too intelligent.

My brother and his wife have two cats. They’re overall pretty cool cats I like them. But we got take out of some Asian chicken wings when we were at their place last night and one of the cats jumped up and grabbed one of my chicken wings and darted off.

How annoying. I didn’t realize cats do that with food.

Maybe there isn't anything additional to do. Just want to see the fires get put out, the people helped, and things rebuilt.

Tired of seeing the fires being used politically.

I know there is a lot of mis and disinformation out there. Waiting for the smoke to clear to get a real scope of what exactly caused this, and if there was mismanagenent.

Other than the reservoir being empty and hydrants running out of water, not sure what's what with all that and whether there is more. Again, waiting to hear.

Its being made to sound like the Mayor knew about the fires before she left, but they started after that, and she came back and seems to doing her job. Not like Ted going to Cancun.

Trump and the right are trying make Newsome and the Mayor scapegoats for sure.

The focus should be on the neighborhoods and people effected not on politics.

Seems like Newsome and the Mayor are doing the best they can.

No doubt mistakes are happening. But there is a huge difference between mistakes in midst of crisis and mismanagement, incompetence, or deliberate sabotage. Incidentally, fire department doesn't maintain hydrants, that is water department. Agree with everything @Chris Craig said. Nothing being done on the right is helping either put out fires, caring for displaced or rebuilding.

Unfortunately, we are going into another red flag warning starting this afternoon until Wednesday afternoon, this time it seems like LA is out of the extreme fire hazard area but I am sure that the winds will pick up there as well even if not to the speed they expect in Riverside, Orange County and San Diego counties. I just hope there is enough containment there that the increase in winds will not create new disaster areas.

Like the last one, we are just on the edge of that area - so with some luck nothing happens around here. Wind at our place is not supposed to get over 20MPH, but all it takes is something a couple of miles away and it could race pretty quickly, we have experienced it with the Cocos fires of 2014 when we were evacuated. (It was minor compared to what we are seeing now in LA, but even that was not a pleasant experience).

We are actually flying to Portland Wednesday morning so will miss the end of that red flag excitement. Of course, our connecting flight is in LAX - so that might not work that well.

Glad Newsome is looking into it. $17 million in cuts to the fire department? That's a big chunk of money. Do those guys come at City level? State level? Are they based on federal money? Certainly something to look into, and it seems like it is.

Those 100 broken fire fighting apparatus need to be fixed pronto and I am sure they are on that too. Probably have mechanics on it as we speak.

Hopefully, the winds chill in the coming days so they can get maximum air support.

California needs some rain.

I would argue that "mistakes in the midst of a crisis" being made by the people whose responsibility it is to manage said crisis does in fact equate to mismanagement and incompetence.

I would agree, however, that sabotage is a bridge too far.

Being competent doesn't mean you never ever make a mistake. Nobody is perfect, not even me.

Being competent means that whatever mistakes you make don't prevent you from actually accomplishing the intended task. If your mistakes are so severe that they result in failure, that is basically the definition of incompetence.
