Naw. Leonard needs some coaching, playing time and more coaching.
He will eventually be better than Lopez I expect, shoots a hell of a lot better right now.

Every year the Blazers have at least one rookie to gamble on.

I don't think we should ship him off for a 2nd rounder, I'd rather just keep.

That being said,
  • Players can improve, a lot even. However, in terms of defense and rebounding he's just not on the road - his heart is elsewhere.
  • He displays a stunning lack of common basketball sense. Despite his amazing athletic tools, it will take a long time for him to improve enough for us. In fact, I don't think basketball is his best sport - he'd be a kickass volleyball player.
  • LaMarcus and Leonard are not compatible. Leonard would be better with a brawny pf who plays close to the basket on both offense and defense.
  • If we make any sort of significant trade salary will have to go out. There are only 3 guys on the team making any significant salary. Matthews is the one who would be traded. If Matthews is indeed traded (we do have a lot of SGs) then Leonard will be used as a sweetener (or throw-in depending on your POV).

We will not just dump Leonard. If we trade Matthews, Leonard is gone as well.

Being 7 foot doesn't make you a center. Besides, Meyer's standing reach and wingspan are more typical of NBA PFs than centers, because he has a long neck and average arms. If Channing Frye grew 1 inch, he wouldn't be a center either.

They need to start looking at Meyers as a PF. That's his best shot to amount to JACK SQUAT in the NBA. And when Joel get's back off to D-League with him! Meyers is a white Channing Frye.

Hey Boob-No-More you never answered my question.....Would you trade Mathews in a trade for Zaza Pachulia?

Zaza is tearing it up. He has a PER = 27.6, a WS/48 of .329, am ORtg of 137 and a DRtg of 99. And, he's actually played 78 minutes. So, he's no flash in the pan. The guy is a total stud. We'd probably have to give them Aldridge and Lillard to pry Pachulia from them.

Who can we get for Mo Williams and Will Barton?

Andre Miller?

I'd be happy to see the Bulls trade Nazr for him.

I can see Thibs screaming at him when he's on the court. Like he did with Asik. Turned him into a good defender.

As bad as Meyers has been that offer is insulting

You can keep the 45 y/o Nazr.

I have come to the conclusion that your concept of fairness is deeply skewed!

I'm not the one who thinks Leonard should be dumped. Some even suggest cutting him outright.

You want a guy who can play some spot minutes as backup now, and you get cap relief after the season. Nazr fits that description.

Not.

Swayed.

You gotta point. Nazr sucks though. I think we would be even more frustrated with him. ;)

I think it may be time for a trade or a release Meyers thread. I was onboard with giving him this year but I just can't stand seeing him on the floor! As hard as it is to believe he looks worse than last year, what a horrible pick

He's playing without confidence and like the immature man he is.

He does need to grow up. But remember he is only 21. How soon should we expect someone to reach the whole 'it's time to be a man' stage?

I don't want to go back and do any atomic bumps, but I seem to recall last year about this time that the BoardThink consensus was that Freeland not only wasn't worth his draft position or contract, but his roster spot. I seem to recall that people were asking me what the cap hit would be if we just released him and spread his cap hit over the next 3 years. I remember him not getting minutes that were going to Jared Jeffries. 8 months later, he's the best big off the bench that we have. His transformation (if you want to call it that) occurred at 26.

ToB did a great job outlining big men who've put it together. True, there are the Olowakandis and Araujos of the world, but releasing him would not be, uh, smart. Adding him as a filler to get a couple of bucks of cap room wouldn't matter b/c we're not close to being under the cap this summer anyway, and will still only have MLE available (unless you're REALLY looking for a 2M trade exception). Which big are you going to get back in a trade who can play the position better than Meyers, and if he could, why would his old team trade him?

I'm not pinning my hopes on the kid, but send him to Boise with Crabbe for a few months and see what happens.

Meyers Leonard will eventually outshine anything Greg Oden, Robin or Joel ever accomplish in the NBA. Worth hanging onto until it happens. It's not like he's in the way, and his presence is a motivator for our other bigs to play hard.

He's inexpensive, already a versatile scorer and passer, and will be a monster by the time he stops growing.

<Raise hand>

Yes I thought freeland was a complete joke last season

People already want to dump Mo Williams? Maybe I'm wearing my Nolan colored glasses, but I think he'll settle down and be a good player off the bench for us. So what, he's shooting 8% from 3pt range so far...that'll go up!

Bah! He's only playing because we have no other options. He's 2-9 in the paint for christ's sake.

We need defense from that position. The focus that we’ve put on defense as a team has paid off so far. And Joel’s earned it. He’s had an impact on the game defensively and he’s had a really good summer. It’s nothing against Meyers. I think Meyers has improved. He’s much better than he was last year; he’s going to continue to get better. But at this point, Joel’s earned it...He’s protecting the rim. He puts his body on the line. I think he’s been consistently doing the dirty work. And he’s gained the respect of his teammates by all the hard work. Like I said, the dirty work — a lot of times it goes unnoticed — but his teammates sure notice it.”

In the end, Freeland earned a rotation spot not by producing gaudy statistics or showcasing jaw-dropping performances, but rather by flashing a little bit of grit and nasty. And, more than anything, by dedicating himself to defense. Freeland finished the seven-game exhibition season averaging just 4.0 points and 5.6 rebounds in 18.3 minutes per game. But the positive defensive traits he displayed throughout camp — altering shots at the rim, playing solid help defense, setting screens, protecting the paint — were enough to persuade Stotts to give him a rotation spot.
