In a pre-draft trade on June 9th, 1980, the Boston Celtics traded the draft rights to the 1st pick (Joe Barry Carroll) and the 13th pick (Rickey Brown) in the 1980 NBA Draft for center Robert Parish and the rights to the 3rd pick in the NBA draft (Kevin McHale).

McHale and Parish both went on to Hall of Fame careers while playing major roles in 3 championship roster on the Boston Celtics. The Celtics won their first of three champions the season right after the trade. Instantly, they had arguably the best frontline in NBA history. The Celtics success in the 1980’s is incredible. They won 3 titles, and won at least 50 games in 11 out of 12 seasons from the trade in 1980 to 1992.

I was thinking of when the Hawks traded the rights for Gasol to the Grizzlies for Shareef Abdur-Rahim, but I was wondering if there has been something more recent.

Can anyone remember the last time a top three pick was traded for a star?
I couldn't find anything except for 1980. I'm really hesitant to trade that pick, actually i hope we keep it. If that pick turns out to become a future hall of famer, we would have 3 of the worst mistakes in history after Jordan and Durant.

Jordan yeah

but how many championships did Durant bring to OKC?

Abdur-Rahim was 24 years old and a 20/9 guy when the Grizz traded him to Atlanta for the rights of Pau Gasol.

That's the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

Dame is the only draw this franchise has for free agents and it's just kicking in since his time with team USA....he's talking with allstars about coming to Portland...you don't trade that away if you're a smart GM...folks who want a youth movement should enjoy the new G league team. In my view Dame is just getting started....I'd call a hater anyone who would petition for him to be traded

There's an argument to be made that for about 7 years he could have brought anyone in and has been on record as trying. We got melo.

It is what it is. I'm fine either way we go. I'm fence riding like a mofo

I read this earlier and the lack of respect for the GOAT of the franchise disgusts me....guy just had a career year even though we were tanking. He's been lobbying all spring for talent to come to Portland. What the fuck more do fans want from this guy...he's a generational unicorn in a small market that loves Portland...haters can fuck right off in my view. Ant you can trade...Nurk you can trade...Dame is untouchable for damned good reasons. RESPECT, PASS IT ON!
What about the pick though, What should the Blazers do with the pick? Do are your thoughts on Towns? You like him over Nurkic?

I'm not sure it being rare indicates anything other than the reality that teams who have a top-3 picks tend to suck and be rebuilding. Meaning they have much more interest in rolling the dice on a rookie than on a vet

keep in mind that for a long time the worst teams had much greater lottery odds than they do today

I didn't say that it indicates anything. I was just curious if anyone could think of it happening recently.

Hendricks is actually who I too would target at 6. BPA at 11. Wagner could always be flipped. But there will be a very good player there at 11 and we have the Schmidt to do player evaluation. We could certainly get Wagner, 6 and 11 for the 3 if Scoot is available and as I said, we could sweeten the deal with 23 or second rounders.
I'd lean heavily towards keeping Wagner. He's already a pretty good scorer, is versatile on defense, and will only be 22 next season. Guys like him who we already know can play combined with a cheap salary for the next two years are guys that we need if we want to win anything with Dame.

We'd probably have to also add #23, but I'd still certainly be on board with that.

He started this lobbying with team USA and got Jerami Grant to make us his preferred trade destination...that was last summer....this is his second summer since team USA and instead of going to Cabo he's going to playoff games and lobbying....he's never done that at this level before....he's part of the front office since Chauncey came on board and Joe was hired. Olshey era wasn't conducive to that by any stretch. Dame got the bag and he's more of a team guy than a me guy.

Ah you right I forgot we had jerami grant since he disappeared lol.

Grant also isn't even a star lol.

But it's cool. We agree on most of it

Dame haters I addressed...anyone who would petition the franchise to trade him to start..

So anyone suggesting a trade, or was there an actual petition? If so, I'm still not sure they are Dame haters and probably more Blazers lovers and just have a different vision for the direction of the team. IF.....Dame had brought a title here, or been even close, that would be different. But again, I refer back to the record for the passed 4 years. Regardless of Dame's individual production on the offensive end, it hasn't translated to wins. I want wins for the franchise more than occasional great moments that end up not meaning a lot.

I really wish Dame had gone more public with publicly wanted to really improve the team after getting swept by the #6 Pelicans. That was the time to do it. I would have been all in on it, the timing of it, and where it fit in Dame's career. Now because it has been some nice moments with a lot of stats, but no real team success, in the last couple years, he sees the window closing and wants something done.

I don't blame him, but don't think it is the best direction for the franchise. That does not in any way make me and my Dame jersey a hater. It does make me a Blazer lover. For years before Dame came, and for years after he is gone....no matter when that is.

I'm curious about this recruiting thing.

Which players actually have had enough prowess to lure great players to their team? Lebron...ok, maybe

Jokic hasn't lured anybody but maybe Bruce Brown. Tim Duncan didn't: Parker, Manu, and Kawhi were all drafted. KG spent years in Minny without luring any notable players. And when KG went to Boston, Pierce was already there, Ray Allen was traded there, and Rondo was drafted. Embiid has lured any notable free agents to Philly, and he's MVP-level. Durant signed with the Warriors, but they already had a championship and Durant's a putz.

Portland's a small market. How many top free-agents actually sign new deals with small market teams or try to force their way to a small market. It's almost always one way streets to large markets.

the Blazer signed Rod Strickland 32 years ago and Brian Grant 26 years ago. But those were back in the days about a half dozen CBA's ago without salary cap restrictions

I agree..... but people keep bringing it up as a reason to keep Dame.

It seems to me that it’s not just a matter of a player’s recruiting prowess. There are way too many factors beyond his control. It’s recruiting prowess + necessary team cap space or exception + player availability + or - team/city attractiveness. Probably need to add a factor for management astuteness or lack thereof. Olshey scored big negatives on that index.

When Sharpe is peaking. When the Blazers unlock their future assets, they're most likely only going to 2029. 6 years. Sharpe would be 26 . Twenty freakin' six. That gives him , potentially , another decade to be special. Plenty of time to add free agents and so on. The ONLY way this team has a chance to compete for a title in the next 4 to 6 years is with Dame and added elements. It ain't happening with one & doners. OKC is in year 7 of the rebuild, and only if Chet is the real deal, does OKC have a chance to compete for a title within the next 5 to 6 years.

But you have used the argument that it will take 6, 7, 8 years for a youth movement to basically have the experience to compete. If we try and fail over a four year period to get Dame his title with vets via trading the picks/players, then have to finally wait for the new youngsters to become competitive, that is 10-12 years, putting Sharpe exactly in Dames shoes currently. I can do math. The plan is crippling for a decade. That is all. I'm not a decision maker for the organization an as a fan for 50+ years, I've shook my head at plenty. Im sure I will be doing a lot of head shaking this summer.

would you sign a petition to demand the office trade him? If not then you're not included in my rant Tpup.....you're welcome to your view though...just don't take it personally ...speculating is one thing...wanting a player gone is another. Haters are people who don't value Dame in Portland and want him gone. I don't get the impression you're in that camp

I am down for the team to trade it, but it has to be for a stud forward. I just don’t know who that will be.

You don’t know me very well

I love debate. If Dame was open to an actual discussion, I would love to have it. I’m capable of arguing either side of the debate though.

A forgotten art form. I was called a hater by some sparky the other day. That is when you know what you are dealing with. Some keyboard cowboys still haven't learned that it is sometimes a good thing to put down the mouse and step away from the keyboard.

I'm searching for a quote from Cronin from last years draft, when he said something like "the offer for the 7th pick would have to blow us away to consider trading it" or something like that. If anyone can find it that would be cool
