I'm sure Dallas would love a top-5 pick this year, but the longer the pick to Atlanta isn't conveyed it kind of messes with not being able to trade any future picks so it might be okay with them to just get it out of the way too.it's protected for picks 1-5 so you can bet the Mavericks will be really pulling for a long-shot result in the lottery
right now, Dallas has about a 10% chance to land in the top-4. But they are only 2.5 games behind Orlando which has a 32% chance at top-4; and 4 games behind Memphis which has a 37% chance
I'd anticipate Dallas 'suffering' a lot of minor injuries the rest of the way
I agree thats why I don't think they are done re-engineering the team with another trade.it's protected for picks 1-5 so you can bet the Mavericks will be really pulling for a long-shot result in the lottery

I don't know about all that as it sure requires a lot of assumptions to be true
but maybe I'm operating under an assumption that may, or may not be true myself. I know there are at least a couple of accountant/financial-planners posting here who may be able to disabuse me of some faulty assumptions I may have:
Paul Allen had a huge estate at the time of his death...over 20B. Even though he was heavy into non-profits and had supposedly pledged to give away a substantial portion of his wealth, there will still be a substantial portion going to his heirs, including the Seahawks and Blazers. The Seahawks are worth around 2.6-2.8B. The Blazers are worth around 1.3B and I don't believe that includes the Moda Center which is a separate entity, although I may have that wrong. So that's at least 4B, maybe quite a bit more, for the sports franchises....
....what will the estate taxes be on just those sports franchises? on 4 billion? The top rate is 40% but obviously, much of it would be taxed at a lower rate. I know there are plenty of loopholes, but even if they could get the total tax on the sports teams down to 15%, that's still at least 600M. Where is that cash going to come from? Jody Allen has said she wants to keep the Seahawks and that she will continue to run the Vulcan group. I'm assuming the Vulcan Group carries non-sports assets on it's books that might be worth a few billion more.
but if eventually, there is an estate tax bill approaching 1 billion and she has little interest in running the Blazers or owning it, the solution sure seems to be to raise the needed tax cash by selling the least favorite sports team
now maybe, they've done such masterful financial planning that I'm significantly over-estimating the estate tax. But that's why I'm asking this as a question
They've already traded 21 and 23 firsts, though, right? So already severely limited.I'm sure Dallas would love a top-5 pick this year, but the longer the pick to Atlanta isn't conveyed it kind of messes with not being able to trade any future picks so it might be okay with them to just get it out of the way too.

Yes, but what I'm saying is that if they don't convey the pick to Atlanta this year then they owe them a 2020 1st (also top 5 protected next year) so then the Knicks 2021 1st gets pushed to 2022 at the earliest and the other one to 2024.They've already traded 21 and 23 firsts, though, right? Nope. Today's February 2nd. The deadline is February 7th.Are we past the deadline yet?

I wouldn't be surprised if Portland's 'move' is something like Thon(g) Maker.
Wouldn’t make much sense right now unless it was just done to replace an outgoing Meyers in a separate deal.
Rumors and action has been quiet the past couple days.
Pick swap won't work with the Bucks because they have weird protection on the 1st they owe Phoenix.Meyers the Right to Swap 1sts, and future 2nds to Milwaukee for Ilyasova and Maker?
There is a thread called unsubstantiated trade rumors, this should go there, ha ha.Steph curry on the trading block! Kerr is sick of him!
Calm before the storm. Maybe not for Portland....but for teams whose GM is not blindingly enamored with 'his' players.

Blazers Trade Talk: Top Otto Porter, Aaron Gordon Packages
Blazers Move Trio of Young Forwards in Otto Porter Trade

If we’re being honest here, how the Blazers view both Al-Farouq Aminu and Maurice Harkless is going to be a big part of this. But even more important is how the Wizards view the two forwards. Both players have upside and can provide a decent amount on both ends of the floor. This is a pretty solid pull for the Wizards, assuming they like the duo.
Meyers Leonard is a player who hasn’t been all that productive to this point in his career, but the Wizards need depth on the front line and he’d provide that. I also think Leonard going to a less-crowded frontcourt could benefit him in a big way. I like how this would work for both sides, especially if Harkless and Leonard can hit their stride.
Blazers Build Pick-Heavy Trade for Aaron Gordon

*Blazers trade two first-round picks (one protected) to Magic
Zach Lowe detailed in the same ESPN storyabove that the Blazers have “put their first-round pick in play” when it comes to possible trades. Not only does it get used here, but the team adds one more first-rounder in a deal that bolsters their outlook both this season and beyond.
Aaron Gordon has the type of upside and playmaking ability to ease the pressure off Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum and Jusuf Nurkic. Their starting five would immediately look scary on paper, and they’d add Terrence Ross as a go-to option off the bench. The big issue with this trade stems from the Magic’s viewpoint of the players coming back.
While the aforementioned Aminu and Harkless offer a decent amount of value, Seth Curry would likely be a rental player, unless Orlando opts to keep him. Evan Turner has been hit-or-miss throughout his career, but can provide scoring off the bench and has flashed upside. Another option for both sides could be to take Ross and one Blazers player out of the deal, along with the protected pick, and work out a smaller package.
Dario Saric has not fit in with Minnesota at all. That’s a guy we should be targeting if we lose out on Mirotic.
I love how one writer has info on us, and it's now on 40 different sites, and makes you feel like theres definitely action. When in reality, they're all just Ben Gollivering the story.https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/...s-76ers-rockets-interested-in-nikola-mirotic/
"Portland, which is very much a buyer for roster depth at the deadline, could be a factor for Mirotic, and the Rockets have long coveted him as a long-range big man. Both are expected to make a pitch for him."
Yup, one guy wrote some stuff now everyone is basically reporting the report heh.I love how one writer has info on us, and it's now on 40 different sites, and makes you feel like theres definitely action. When in reality, they're all just Ben Gollivering the story.
