OLSHEY FIRED

meh that's not true. Finished in the top 5 four times and had 50+ wins three times. It's not a contender and it's not entirely his contribution, but it coulda been worse. My biggest problem with Neil was his lack of creativity and conservative nature of his dealings. Dude NEVER took risks. I figured that was a directive from ownership, but it was also a way for him to just skate by without getting fired.

Back when we brought Olshey in from LAC and he was the hot up-and-coming executive with a reputation for being tight with big name players due to his old developmental connections, I questioned whether that was a bad sign for his future dealings once he had aged out of those connections. He sure got stale pretty quick once he was purely front office.

woah man he got us aminu with those connections!

The idea that a team is *ever* hamstrung by a bad contract has been debunked by Wiz, I think, maybe someone else.

You can get off of *any* contract for a couple future picks.

Look at John Wall

I don't know about Jody Allen---but this tracks with Bert and the Vulcans.
I’m such a dbag that I love that they canned his candy ass in this fashion.

Dude thought he was sitting on a throne of gold only for him to get a swift kick in the nuts out of nowhere.

I felt bad for Stotts because he was kind of a dead man walking. This one, no empathy at all.

Haha. He's been posting for like 5 years or so. Congrats to the guy behind the Fire Neil Olshey twitter Account. You deserve this, like all Blazers fans deserve it
Look around. It's probably one of us.

Mo, Nate, Terry - none of them particularly good coaches (OK Mo was just bad), but they all seemed like good people. You could want them gone without feeling any personal animosity. Olshit is different. He has a gift for making people dislike him. A gift usually only seen in folks who get a kick out of being a miserable asshole.

Put some some guys around Dame who have heart & soul.
So: trade the guys who are trash that we have for guys that are great! Sounds like a plan - all we have to do is find teams that are willing to give good players for trash.

Olshey's one claim to fame was getting Chris Paul when David Stern killed the Lakers trade.

You mean the guy who they're literally paying $44M not to play, but still can't trade? That guy?
How did he end up in Houston again?

And if they really wanted to move him they’d attach their assets to him.

They clearly don’t want to move him *that bad*. and it makes no sense why they would because they’re not a contender. Why would you attach your likely Lottery picks to Wall just to get off his salary for the hell of it?

Canzano can.

Quick is actually pretty good. He's honest, which I know a lot of people hate because they have this weird thing where everything about the team must be positive or laden with excuses as to why they suck.

Because, they do suck. And that was on olshey.

We finally have hope and I've forgotten what that feels like as a Blazers fan.

Well it’s good to at least agree on Canzano needing to go as well.

Quick is better than Canzano I agree but he did rub many people the wrong way as well when he was the blazers writer at the Oregonian and there is a reason he left there.

So: "everyone's tradeable if you're prepared to ruin your franchise's future to do it" - that's your important insight?

You don’t ruin your future by trading draft picks, particularly if you’re trying to get off said bad contract to open up cap space, for instance, to make a title run. Why would you be a shit team and attach good picks?

Which is precisely why I said Houston has no reason to do it. Circumstances matter.

Houston / OKC / bottom feeder teams are the ones you ship your bad contracts to, and they’ll eat it, in exchange for mid-to end of 1st-draft picks most likely. The obvious risk is if you suck (like the Nets) and that pick ends up being #6.

Bottom feeders aren’t trying to get off bad contracts. They want them. So they can get assets.

We could get rid of CJ tomorrow if we really wanted in exchange for a bunch of shit contracts that last one year. Would we get equal value? No. But we could clear up cap space incredibly easily and “fix” our payroll issue.

Like I said, some other posted went on about this.

By the way, GMs that come in and don't choose their coach ---> The coach usually does not last long. I heard a stat somewhere that when this happens the new coach is usually fired within a year or two (don't remember what the exact timeline was). But it will be interesting to see how that works with Billups who is on a 4 year deal and was chosen by Olshey.

Chad Buchanan was interim GM who in one day, fired Nate McMillan, dumped Marcus Camby, and traded Gerald Wallace for Mehmet Okur and the pick they used on Dame
Honestly, I'd love to see them go get Buchanan. I'd feel pretty good about that hire.

A contract that lasts one year is not a shit contract. Shit contracts are John Wall, Kevin Love... and CJ.
Obviously you're too young to remember RLEC.

This is what I would expect to happen. Olshey was gone as soon as he fired Stotts and claimed the roster wasn't the problem.

Sorry, contracts of *shitty* players who have less time remaining in their contract.
And I do remember RLEC. and it was so valuable it got us… nothing.

Edit - Can also find a team that is tanking and has salary cap space and do an uneven trade.

Anyhow, the point is, you aren’t hamstrung for “years” unless you choose to be.
