When I worked at Tektronix everyone got 10 paid sick days every year. Unused sick time was converted to supplemental health insurance upon retirement. Unused sick time was treated as unused vacation when an employee quit. I always thought that was fair.
Right, and those fees are harder for poor people (including higher rates of minorities) to pay, so it impacts them disproportionately.

This is absolutely true.
Once again, better social policies would go a long way toward mitigating this problem...
This is a great argument for improving our education system and social safety net.
Which is why Republicans oppose both.
Society can teach respect. Schools can certainly be a part of that.
I learned respect from my schools, my church and from my parents. Not to mention cub scouts, boy scouts and the army. It takes a village to raise a child.
Until Parents start teaching their kids respect and showing respect, nothing the schools do will matter. Starts with the parents.
People respond to the systems available to them. Social policies are the solution here.
